Shakyamuni (the title of the first Buddha) was Siddhartha Gautama. He is believed to have lived in eastern India between the 6th and 4th century BC. He was a prince who left behind his wealth and titles and became a monk. He is recognized by followers as the divine teacher, who achieved full Buddhahood after sitting under a Bodhi tree meditating for 49 days. He went on to share his experience, teachings, and knowledge to help others find the enlightened path.

A mandala Buddha tattoo can be a beautiful and meaningful way to express your spirituality. Getting a giant sleeve tattoo on the inside of your upper arm is a little crazy, right? All the shading and fading drawing techniques made this tattoo look quite real. Buddha tattoos always align with other images and nature linked closely with the religion – most of which are tied to themes of wisdom, enlightenment, and understanding. The teachings of the Buddha emphasize compassion and wisdom, and a Buddha tattoo can symbolize these values. It can remind the wearer to approach life with an open heart and a clear mind.

This small hand tattoo of Buddha is well drawn and incorporates the subject’s thumb very well into the context the ink, which represents the full enlightenment mudra. The Buddhist monk is usually depicted sitting cross-legged, holding his hands together and gazing upwards towards the sky. His body is covered in tattoos, some of which are symbolic depictions of enlightenment, while others represent deities or animals. After becoming enlightened, he spent the rest of his life teaching others about the true nature of reality.

This Buddha is taking a nap – helping people on their path to enlightenment must be tiring. Enjoyable negative space tendril lazily weaving through this sleeve tattoo. Give a cool sense of otherness to the fundamental heavy gray of the full image and lightens the art somewhat.

It symbolizes determination, focus, as well as hard-work and power. This Buddha face tattoo will suit you if you prefer portraits, as well as noticeable designs on top of your chest. This black tattoo will let others know that you are brave, bold, as well as courageous. It is also a masterpiece, and a gorgeous tattoo for people who don’t mind the attention. Buddha tattoo ideas such as this one will tell that you are creative, optimistic, as well as fascinated by space, and you are aware of your surroundings.

Accessible parking, assistive listening devices, open captioning, sign language interpretation and sensory-inclusive aid are available. The Center offers underground, on-site, valet and self-parking options during performance times. Additional highlights of his season include returning to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to lead Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and conducting Wagner’s Lohengrin at Deutsche Oper Berlin. He also returns to Switzerland’s Bern Symphony, where he is Principal Guest Conductor, to lead three programs including Schubert and Beethoven symphonies, a celebratory New Years Day concert, and a season finale with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. Since his debut that year with La Traviata, he has conducted 67 different operas and more than 455 performances to date with the company. The Winspear stands in a long line of opera houses that reserve innovation for the exterior rather than for the theater inside. Jørn Utzon’s Sydney Opera House (1973) in Australia, and more recently Snøhetta’s Norwegian National Opera House in Oslo (2009) come to mind in this regard. Most of these schemes employ the horseshoe configuration established by Carlo Fontana in Venice more than 300 years ago and championed by Essert today; one of the few exceptions is Zaha Hadid’s unbuilt Cardiff Bay Opera House (1994–96).

The firm clad the Winspear’s concrete drum with bright ruby PVB (polyvinyl butyral) interlayers laminated between two sheets of glass. By illuminating the colorful skin from both the back and front, the designers were able to create bold signage in the daytime and at night, when the house is washed in a red glow of light. The entrance to the Winspear Opera House features the Annette and Harold Simmons Signature Glass Facade, which ascends 60 feet creating a seamless visual appearance between the vibrant red glass panels of the McDermott Performance Hall and the surrounding Sammons Park. The principal performance space, Margaret McDermott Performance Hall, features gold leaf covered balconies, retractable screens, a spacious fly-tower, a three-square stage with generous side and rear stage areas allowing for opera to be more easily performed in repertoire. The modern Moody Foundation Chandelier showcases more than 300 LED rods that retract into the ceiling prior to performances. This ascension is accompanied by music specially commissioned by composer Philip Glass.

Orchestral highlights include appearances with Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Vienna Philharmonic, and San Francisco Symphony, among others. Grammy Award-winning baritone Lucas Meachem returns as the ill-fated playboy, leading a dazzling ensemble of singers including Craig Colclough, Guanqun Yu and Isabel Leonard. James Conlon, renowned for his astonishing command of Mozart, conducts what many consider to be the greatest of all operas in a visually spectacular production by director Kasper Holten, with scenery by stage designer extraordinaire Es Devlin, known for innovative stage designs for Beyoncé, Adele, U2 and others. De Grey is particularly enthusiastic about an outdoor performance space currently under construction that aims to reinforce the building’s reputation for reaching out to the public. Connected with the opera house and protected by the solar canopy, this outdoor square will continue a tradition of pop concerts and fiestas that for decades have attracted as many as 5,000 people a night.

He has also conducted at leading opera houses and festivals such as the Vienna State Opera, Salzburg Festival, La Scala, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Mariinsky Theatre, Covent Garden, Chicago Lyric Opera, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, and Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. In a daring gesture in car-centric Dallas, the architects placed egress from underground parking in the landscaped plaza outside the building, forcing all patrons to enter through the same set of doors on grade. However, what might have been a dramatic processional fails to materialize because the entrance aligns with the arts center’s new north–south axis rather than the opera house’s main axis. So visitors enter to one side of the grand stairway that anchors the enormous lobby, an arrangement akin to slipping in the side door. Furthermore, the performance hall’s red-glass panels, while effective from the exterior, fail to warm up the rather cool feeling of the lofty glass-and-aluminum lobby. Circulation nevertheless appears to be efficient, via elevators and wide stairs that hug the theater’s curve, with bars and cafés on the first and second levels.

Peixin Chen is recognized for his majestically resonant bass voice and for a keen dramatic instinct that he brings to a wide range of roles on the international opera stage. His repertoire spans from the comic parts of Donizetti, Mozart and Rossini to the strong and serious roles of Puccini, Verdi and Wagner. In previous seasons, Ms. Zhang performed with Switzerland’s Verbier Festival as Pamina in The Magic Flute, Opera National Bordeaux and Guangzhau Opera House as Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Philadelphia Orchestra in L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, Tianjin Grand Opera as Lucia in The Rape of Lucretia and Harbin Symphony Orchestra as Marzelline in Fidelio.

For the Israeli Opera she designed costumes for Don Giovanni, Idomeneo and La Traviata. It employs a traditional horseshoe configuration, which Bob Essert, the opera’s acoustical consultant, deems “a guarantee of good acoustics.” Four gently sloped tiers of seating only 90 feet from the stage make the hall feel exceptionally intimate. The glass-fiber-reinforced-concrete fronts of these balconies, which look like crinkled ribbons when illuminated, stand out against the dark brown, textured-plaster peripheral walls and make the 2,200-seat theater feel smaller than it is. By continuing the balconies’ top tier in a ring in front of the barely noticeable proscenium, the architects further enhanced this effect. A fire curtain designed by Argentine artist Guillermo Kuitca protects the main stage, which is supplemented with an ample rear stage and wings, all equipped with state-of-the-art technology. A 70-foot-tall retractable chandelier made of 318 thin, acrylic light rods, along with charcoal-gray Ultrasuede upholstery and burnt walnut floors, complete the house’s elegant decor.

By creating a temperate outdoor oasis, the canopy reduces heating and cooling loads on indoor spaces. The architects employed a number of other energy-saving strategies, including a displacement ventilation system in the hall that pumps air from the floor—cooling people but not all the space above them. They also landscaped the shady refuge under the pergolalike structure with squares of lawn and wildflower plantings and a black-granite reflecting pool where a film of water hovers above the names of donors, flush with the surrounding pavement. While the canopy’s enormous grid extends the building’s reach outdoors and helps to define an enlarged public realm, its scale and rigidity are oppressive. This intimate recital hall is ideal for private gatherings and performances for audiences of up to 200.

Scarpia orders Spoletta and his agents to follow her, assuming she will lead them to Cavaradossi and Angelotti. He privately gloats as he reveals his intentions to possess Tosca and execute Cavaradossi. A procession enters the church singing the Te Deum; exclaiming ‘Tosca, you make me forget even God!

He has collaborated with acclaimed conductor Gustavo Dudamel for performances of Timur in Turandot with the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Born in North Carolina, Lucas Meachem studied music at Appalachian State University, the Eastman School of Music, and Yale University before becoming an Adler Fellow with the San Francisco Opera. The Margaret McDermott Performance Hall in the Margot & Bill Winspear Opera House has five levels, accessible via six floors (5th and 6th serve the Grand Tier). This course explores the features, surface materials, and design options for rooftop deck systems and provides an overview of recommended planning and installation guidelines.

The voices of Spoletta, Sciarrone and soldiers are heard, indicating that Scarpia’s body has been found, and that Tosca is known to have killed him. As Spoletta, Sciarrone and the soldiers rush in, Tosca rises, evades their clutches, and runs to the parapet. He has worked on over 70 productions in 9 countries, and served for 3 years as a board member of industry body Stage Directors UK.

He was one of the first five recipients of the Opera News Awards, and was honored by the New York Public Library as a Library Lion. He was named Commendatore Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana by Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic. He was also named Commandeur de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture and, in 2002, personally accepted France’s highest honor, the Legion d’Honneur, from then-President of the French Republic Jacques Chirac. A house favorite with Belgium’s Opera Vlaanderen, he has appeared with the company as Telramund, Kurwenal, Macbeth and the title role of Falstaff, in a production directed by Oscar-winning actor Christoph Waltz. The foundation aims to represent inclusivity and diversity of people today by using classical music as a relevant medium to address current issues through a traditional art form.

He was appointed artistic director of the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen at age 26, and successfully oversaw the company moving into a new grand opera house in Copenhagen. Mr. Conlon is an enthusiastic advocate of public scholarship and cultural institutions as forums for the exchange of ideas and inquiry into the role music plays in our shared humanity and civic life. At LA Opera, he leads pre-performance talks, drawing upon musicology, literary studies, history, and social sciences to contemplate—together with his audience—the enduring power and relevance of opera and classical music in general. Additionally, he frequently collaborates with universities, museums, and other cultural institutions, and works with scholars, practitioners, and community members across disciplines. His appearances throughout the country as a speaker on a variety of cultural and educational topics are widely praised.

This is where you can see the award-winning work of its five resident companies, along with its two programming partners. British video designer Luke Halls has produced video designs and animations for a wide variety of music, theater and dance performances. Opera work includes Don Giovanni (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden), Otello (Metropolitan Opera) and Carmen (Bregenz Festival Lake Stage).Theatre work includes West Side Story (Broadway), Ugly Lies The Bone, The Lehman Trilogy (National Theatre) and The Nether (Royal Court). Halls has worked prolifically for music artists, creating video designs and animation for tours by Adele, Beyoncé, Pet Shop Boys, U2 and Rihanna, among others. Kasper Holten is one of Scandinavia's most sought-after stage directors today and works all over the world.

Additional roles performed include the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro and Juliette in Roméo et Juliette. Previous concert appearances include Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate with the New Jersey Symphony, Glière’s Concerto for Coloratura Soprano and Orchestra with Camerata Notturna, and solo recitals with pianist Ken Noda at Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Auditorium and Miami’s Wertheim Performing Arts Center. Attitudes toward the arts have changed radically since the initial plan for the center respectfully aligned each institution along a single street (Flora). Today, generous open spaces intended to attract crowds of nontheatergoers are considered as important as the buildings themselves. To encourage this democratization, the architects enlivened the plan with new axes that link the buildings with plazas and the surrounding streets—notably a north–south path perpendicular to Flora.

The Fall of the House of Usher Summary, Characters, Themes, & Facts

fall of house of usher

Described by Frederick as “Gucci Caligula,” Perry is the youngest of the Usher children. Having only recently been thrust into the life of the ultra-rich, Perry’s goal is to make life one big party, and he’s hoping to use his family’s money to achieve just that. “It’s batshit crazy in the best possible way,” Carla Gugino told Netflix during production. “It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul.” In the series, Gugino portrays a shape-shifter named Verna, whose origins can be traced back to a — let’s just say — very famous Poe character.

“The Haunted Palace”

Soon, Roderick posits his theory that the house itself is unhealthy, just as the narrator supposes at the beginning of the story. Might we then interpret Roderick as a symbol of the conscious mind – struggling to conceal some dark ‘secret’ and make himself presentable to his friend, the narrator – and Madeline as a symbol of the unconscious? Note how Madeline is barely seen for much of the story, and the second time she appears she is literally buried (repressed?) within the vault. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ is probably Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous story, and in many ways it is a quintessential Gothic horror story.

Cast and characters

To request a guided tour, please email us at with your preferred date and time. Philip Winthrop (Mark Damon) travels to the House of Usher, a desolate mansion surrounded by a murky swamp, to see his fiancée Madeline Usher (Myrna Fahey). Roderick foresees the family evils being propagated into future generations with a marriage to Madeline and vehemently discourages the union. Philip becomes increasingly desperate to take Madeline away; desperate to get away from her brother, she agrees to leave with him. It’s not perfect – the order in which the Poe family meet their fates is a case of diminishing returns, as its most intriguing members are dispatched too quickly. Some of the CGI, particularly one scene involving bodies falling from the sky, is unintentionally funny. Problematically, Flanagan tends to conflate queerness with depravity and sexual fluidity is punished here with an unnerving flourish. But the show remembers to be actually scary, with truly inspired uses of chimps, mirrors and sprinkler systems. There’s no question that The Fall of the House of Usher ranks among Flanagan’s finest works.

Both poems parallel and thus predict the plot line of “The Fall of the House of Usher.” “Mad Trist,” which is about the forceful entrance of Ethelred into the dwelling of a hermit, mirrors the simultaneous escape of Madeline from her tomb. “Mad Trist” spookily crosses literary borders, as though Roderick’s obsession with these poems ushers their narratives into his own domain and brings them to life. Madeline soon dies, and Roderick decides to bury her temporarily in the tombs below the house. He wants to keep her in the house because he fears that the doctors might dig up her body for scientific examination, since her disease was so strange to them.

As the series draws to a close, Verna—whose name is an anagram of the titular bird in Poe's classic 1845 poem "The Raven"—is shown placing an item on each of the Usher's graves that represents their respective downfalls, closing the loop of her karmic retribution. As Roderick finishes his story, an eyeless and bloodied Madeline suddenly bursts out of the basement and attacks Roderick as the house begins to crumble around them. In a final burst of strength, Madeline strangles Roderick to death as Auggie flees collapsing home—a sequence that mirrors the ending of Poe's "House of Usher."

Every episode includes flashbacks to a young Roderick (Zach Gilford), Madeline (Willa Fitzgerald), and Annabel Lee (Katie Parker), Roderick’s first wife. These fill in how the Ushers made their fortune, but they’re kind of a narrative drag. It’s important that Roderick and Madeline are cruel, selfish creatures—less so how they got that way.

Related Stories

Roderick tells the narrator that he suffers from nerves and fear and that his senses are heightened. Roderick’s sister, Madeline, has taken ill with a mysterious sickness—perhaps catalepsy, the loss of control of one’s limbs—that the doctors cannot reverse. He listens to Roderick play the guitar and make up words for his songs, and he reads him stories, but he cannot lift Roderick’s spirit.

Plot

(Poe had one too.) Roderick has been haunted by all his awful children who have shuffled off this mortal coil, and it’s because it feels like the ghosts are finally coming for him that he is ready to confess. He’s having visions of monstrous ghosts, including the recurring specter of Verna (Carla Gugino), a figure that connects most of these tall tales as a sort of vengeful force of karma, the devil come to take what she’s due from a man who profited off the pain of others. Within a few hours of the narrator’s arrival, Roderick begins to share some of his theories about his family. Much to the narrator’s surprise, Roderick claims that the Usher mansion is sentient and that it exercises some degree of control over its inhabitants. According to Roderick, Madeline suffers from a cataleptic disease that has gradually limited her mobility.

Perhaps the most obvious parallel lies in the initially shallow crack in the manor, representing the impending destruction of the house. Because the last of the Usher line are twins, that the crack divides the house in two signals their eternal separation in death. Roderick has come from a miserable childhood with a puritanical, sickly mother who believes that “pain and suffering are the kiss of Jesus”. The family is made up of Flanagan’s regular ensemble of actors, and to buy them as relatives requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, but for Flanagan fans, there’s great fun to be had seeing how these favourites fit into his new tale of terror.

It is revealed that Roderick's sister, Madeline, is also ill and falls into cataleptic, deathlike trances. Flanagan finishes his Netflix contract on a high, gleefully capturing Poe’s magic, eerie romance and sense of dread. His shows have become the streaming service’s best offerings for spooky season, and it is hard to imagine how that void will be filled.

The overarching narrative of The Fall of the House of Usher loosely follows Poe's 1839 short story of the same name, with Roderick recounting his decades-spanning tale to Auggie inside his decrepit childhood home. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the setting, diction, and imagery combine to create an overall atmosphere of gloom. The story opens on a “dull, dark, and soundless day” in a “singularly dreary tract of country.” As the narrator notes, it is autumn, the time of year when life begins to give way to old age and death. A mere glimpse of the Usher mansion inspires in the narrator “an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart.” Upon entering the house, the reader as the narrator navigates through a series of dark passages lined with carvings, tapestries, and armorial trophies.

In 1950, a British film version of The Fall of the House of Usher was produced starring Gwen Watford, Kay Tendeter and Irving Steen. The bedroom door is then blown open to reveal Madeline, bloodied from her arduous escape from the tomb. In a final fit of rage, she attacks her brother, scaring him to death as she herself expires. The narrator then runs from the house, and, as he does, he notices a flash of moonlight behind him. He turns back in time to see the Moon shining through the suddenly widened crack in the house. As he watches, the House of Usher splits in two and the fragments sink away into the lake.

He took on Shirley Jackson in The Haunting of Hill House (which was fabulous), Henry James in The Haunting of Bly Manor (spooky but saccharine) and Christopher Pike in The Midnight Club (meh). Thankfully, Flanagan and Poe’s sensibilities prove a winning pairing, staying on the edge of terror without cascading into jump scares and sentimentality. Guilt permeates every frame of Flanagan’s Poe universe, and buys into not so much the horror as the terror. The secret that is buried and then comes to light (represented by Madeline) is never revealed.

Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies. From his arrival, the narrator notes the family's isolationist tendencies, as well as the cryptic and special connection between Madeline and Roderick, the final living members of the Usher family. Throughout the tale and her varying states of consciousness, Madeline completely ignores the narrator's presence. After Roderick Usher claims that Madeline has died, the narrator helps Usher entomb Madeline in an underground vault despite noticing Madeline's flushed, lifelike appearance.

It’s located inside the neighborhood alleys but still within 15 minute ride to the port. Le Meridien and the Hotel 1898 are a bit further, but their main entrance is on a side street, forcing them to go through the Raval to get you to the port. Anyway the detour is short and they stay within the 15 minutes range from the port. The Silken Concordia is further away, but it has the same problem. They happen to be located in the side of the street where traffic drives AWAY from the Barcelona Port.

When choosing a hotel near Barcelona Cruise Port, it is essential to consider its location and proximity to the port. Ideally, you want a hotel that is conveniently located, allowing you to easily access the cruise terminal without the need for extensive transportation. Look for hotels that are within walking distance or offer shuttle services to the port. This will save you time and make your embarkation process smoother.

Hilton Garden Inn Ft Lauderdale Airport-Cruise Port Parking FLL Fort Lauderdale Reservations & Reviews

hilton garden inn ft lauderdale airport cruise port

This is my first cruise since September, 2018, and a solo one at that. I prefer to arrive a day or so prior to the cruise to explore the area. I also prefer NOT to rent a car and instead utilize public transit.

Review Highlights

(The PDQ Chicken was drive-though only at the time of my visit). The hotel does have a free airport shuttle, but you are advised to call after you collect your luggage. For $20, they offer transportation from the hotel to the cruise terminal on a charter bus. A damage deposit of US$50 is required on arrival. This will be collected by credit card. You should be reimbursed on check-out.

To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team. The Dania area is very busy with expressways and such. We like the 17th street area north of the airport. You can walk up and down 17th St. Plenty of places to eat, and real close to the port. As a place to stay to explore the local area, this has shortcomings. Bus routes 6 and 16 run by the hotel, but on infrequent schedules, and often require transfers to other busses.

We liked the proximity of the hotel to the airport & cruise port, which was our destination. Hotel shuttle was great, local shopping & dining was quite sufficient. Carnival Spirit ship details, destinations, deck plans and more

carnival cruise carnival spirit

Interior staterooms are either basic interior rooms or interior rooms with obstructed-view windows. You might prefer the latter if you’d like a little extra natural light, but you don’t want to pay for a full ocean view stateroom. Here's our complete overview of the Carnival Spirit cruise ship, with what to do onboard and venues. Carnival Spirit features bars and lounges, plus entertainment that’s great for when you’re feeling like live comedy, musical performances and more.

Oceanview Cabin

As you step into a Junior Suite aboard Carnival Spirit, you can’t help but feel that you’re stepping into full-size luxury in a smaller package. Featuring a standard-size balcony, in a Carnival Spirit Junior Suite you'll find everything else there is to love about a suite, including VIP check-in, a walk-in closet… and even a whirlpool tub for relaxing. Carnival-logoed Beach Towels are provided in each cruise accommodation for passengers to take ashore. For all other cruise accommodations, bathrobes are provided (upon request) during the turndown service on the first evening. Bathrobes can be purchased at $49 (adult size) and $24 (children sizes /2-4 yo and 6-8 yo). If the guest has not prepaid a tip, the recommended amount per person will be transferred to the Sail & Sign account on the penultimate day of the cruise.

Health and wellness seminars occur three or four times a day, along with a couple of special interest lectures by the cruise director or a visiting expert. Sushi-making demonstrations in the Bonsai Sushi restaurant and ticketed wine-and-cheese tasting in the adults-only Serenity are held at least once on each cruise. Art auctions, cooking demonstrations and, of course, bingo are also popular.

The optional theme nights are also a lot of fun, lasting until late at night, with everyone dressed in 80s, Mexican or Caribbean costumes. The new program features six- to 12-night itineraries to the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Central America and Florida, with planned visits to Aruba, Grand Turk, Jamaica, Freeport, Key West and more. Since arriving in Mobile in October 2023, the Carnival Spirit has offered a series of six- to eight-night cruises to the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Some GS-OS suites have a single/double sofa bed and/or upper bed for 3rd/4th person. Vista Suites are all with aft location and feature larger wrap-around balconies. In May 2016, Carnival Australia introduced faster and cheaper internet and social media Internet packages on the Australia-based ships Carnival Legend and Carnival Spirit.

Decks and Cabins

In early 2012, Carnival Spirit underwent a US$7 million refurb to make her ready for a new home in Australia. Following the last refit in 2015, Aussies also benefit from enhanced coffee, more draught beers and more cabins with interconnecting doors. However, if you’d like to get active in a non-traditional way, that’s an option, too.

The main sunbathing and lounging deck is Deck 9 around the Dome, Sun and Serenity pools. Another area for lounging (on pods) is both the port and starboard sides of Deck 9. Pods can take two people, but the covering is vinyl rather than cloth, so they are not the most comfortable.

Carnival Spirit Cruise Ship: Overview and Things to Do

The itineraries featured visits to several destinations in both regions, including Bimini, Nassau and Half Moon Cay – one of Carnival Corporation’s private destinations in the Bahamas. Sailing to Seattle, the one-way cruise features a full transit of the Panama Canal, in addition to visits to destinations in Grand Cayman, Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico. Guests who book directly with Carnival can add a prepaid tip at Carnival.com.

Day 6: Ketchikan

Full of great eating, drinking and fun, this cruise ship proves that life is all about the journey. As the ship cruises year-round in Australia, the majority of passengers are Australian and most from the east coast cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Passengers will most likely have cruised before on local P&O, Princess or Royal Caribbean ships. Walking around Carnival Spirit is like taking a trip around the world. Passengers will either love or hate the look, but eventually they get used to it. Once you start focusing on the activities, the food, the entertainment and interacting with the crew, the decor starts to fade into the background.

Better yet, all of these kids venues are free, with lots of non-stop programming. Otherwise, if you book a balcony cabin, expect a very similar aesthetic to what you’ll find in all the other staterooms, with lots of orange, red, creams and gold accents. The number of crew members is slightly higher than the older Fantasy-class vessels. Carnival Spirit is by no means a big ship, and that’s because it’s designed to be able to sail through the Panama Canal and deal with harsher regions, such as Greenland. In our onboard comedy club, you’ll find a rotating case of jokesters who are no strangers to the comedy stage.

However, due to the Coronavirus crisis, the CCL Spirit ship was paused for 2+ years (March 2020 thru May 2022), with a planned restart from Brisbane QLD on May 29th. In February 2022, the Australian deployment was replaced with the Caribbean (homeporting in Jacksonville Florida, starting on March 7th) replacing Carnival Sensation. Then, an even greater renovation took place in 2015, in Australia, for $44 million, really overhauling the ship and adding a lot of the venues that are now staples on all Carnival ships.

We make sure cruisers are fully prepared for their cruise vacation with tips on ships and ports.Millions of travelers rely on Cruise Hive in the United States, Europe, Australia, and around the world. With classic Carnival brands on board, as well as plenty of fun activities to discover at all hours of the day, you’ll find you’ll hardly run out of things to do while sailing on Carnival Spirit. Carnival Spirit is in the Carnival Spirit-class, which means that it is identical to Carnival Pride, Carnival Miracle and Carnival Legend.

By day, the dress code is tropical casual as the ship visits the gorgeous isles of New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji (with the occasional foray to New Zealand and Tasmania, where it's a little bit cooler).

In-cabin babysitting is not available (read more at Camp Ocean below). Cribs in cruise cabins are provided complimentary (upon request). In Main Dining Rooms are provided complimentary high chairs and booster seats. The Chippendale Library and internet cafe are also on Deck 3.

The improved internet access offers increased bandwidth and speed. Carnival's complimentary children's programs cater to all ages -- from 2-year-olds to teens -- and are split into five separate age groups with different hangouts on different decks. A beauty salon offering haircuts and styling and makeup treatments is beside the spa, while the sauna and steam rooms (free) are located within the men's and women's changing rooms. The waiting room is small, and on my visit for a collagen facial (which was sublimely relaxing), all seats were occupied, mostly by men who seemed to be waiting for their partners. Carnival's family entertainment -- "Hasbro, The Game Show" (playing giant Connect 4 and Yahtzee games) and the adorable Towel Animal Theatre production for the youngest kids -- also takes place in the theatre.

The cost is AU$3.25 per washer load and AU$3.25 per dryer load. Vending machines dispense small boxes of detergent and water softener at AU$1.50 per box. There are lots of official entertainment venues across Carnival Spirit, but you don’t necessarily have to go to one of these official venues in order to have a great time. Wherever you happen to be, there’s always going to be something fun going on. Activities pop up all the time, so keep your eye out for everything from bingo games to trivia, comedy improv to dance classes, live music to poolside movies. Staterooms come standard with amenities such as flat-screen televisions, in-room safes and non-stocked mini bars.

25+ Fashionable Cruise Outfits for Ladies affordable cruise wear

I should note that clean, dark jeans are allowed in the main dining room. On most nights my husband wore khakis, but this evening he wore a jeans and a polo style shirt. This rose purple summer dress ended up being one of my favorites! Since I’m only 5.2 it’s a bit longer than a true mid length dress, but I still loved it. The straps are adjustable and it has a loose top, which makes it a flattering cruise outfit for women of any age and body type. They’re a step down from a fancy dress but are still elevated and fashionable enough for the evenings.

You can bring heels, but keep in mind that you’ll be doing plenty of walking on cruise ships, and most of the time they are carpeted. If your heels are uncomfortable on land, they will be uncomfortable at sea. I find that a little black dress is a perfect item to bring because it’s dressy and easy to pack. After that, you’ll probably walk around the ship or head to the resort deck which you’ll need to bring a bathing suit and beach coverup.

What to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise for the Nighttime

A halter chiffon top like this pairs beautifully with a white skirt, pants or jeans. It can go from day to evening, depending on how dressy you’re feeling. One piece rompers are very popular and are perfect when you’re hanging out by the pool or doing activities on the cruise ship. Plus, it can be worn later on in the cruise and no one would even know. This cute romper is a very cute and affordable embarkation day outfit. For a full list of what to bring on a cruise, read my Ultimate Cruise Packing List here.

More Cruise Outfit and Packing Ideas

If you’re sailing in the Caribbean then chances are that you’re going to the beach. In that case, wearing your swimsuit with a cover-up or simply wearing something casual into the port is ideal. You’ll find that the outfits run the gamut from simply a nice shirt and pants all the way to a tuxedo for some guys. For ladies, a cute blouse is fine, all the way to a full-length formal gown. While formal night might be intimidating for some, it’s actually not that big of a deal. Yes, you could dress casual to dinner and no one would really pay much mind.

Essential Items to Pack

The evening dress code on our Princess cruise was smart casual for most nights. I don’t like to stress about what to wear on a cruise, especially Caribbean cruise itineraries. I like to pack comfortable sundresses and rompers that I can wear both on the cruise ship when hanging out on the lido deck, as well as in cruise ports of call. On embarkation day I wore a navy blue and white stripe casual dress. It was super comfortable, and I figured I could wear it both during the day on our cruise as well as in the evening on a smart casual night. In this post, I share photos of cruise wear I wore for embarkation, during the day on the ship and ports of call, and formal wear.

Dressed Up Sundress for Formal Dining

One of the things I love about Caribbean cruises is that it is a warm weather cruise. You don’t need to worry about packing for cold weather (unless there is some weird weather in the 7 day weather forecast). All of the above are items that we would include on our Caribbean cruise packing list.

What to wear on a Caribbean Cruise

Alaska is known for its stunning scenery - and it’s one of our favorite places to cruise! However, you can almost guarantee that you will run into cooler weather during your cruise. Even in the heat of summer, you can be hit with cold and rainy weather in Alaska. During your Caribbean cruise, you can count on having at least one Formal Night or Dress Your Best. Shorter cruises will call this evening Dress Your Best while longer sailings will call it Formal Night. Of all the destinations you can cruise with Royal Caribbean, you can expect the most participation on Formal Night if you’re sailing on a European itinerary.

Discover Secrets of How Do Cruise Ships Float And Not Tip Over?

Don’t take any chances and keep it safely nestled within a lanyard throughout your vacation. Also, it offers maximum coverage as compared to the two-piece swimsuits. But to be honest we’re also used to turning heads when we travel together and get all dressed up, so that wouldn’t really have stopped us anyways, lol. Iesha, Megs, and Jess are lookin’ so cute in their cover-ups! Plus, a two-piece set like this gives you plenty of options to mix and match. The bandeau top would be so cute with denim shorts, and the skirt would be fun with a crochet cami top.

For dinner, shorts, jeans, and flip-flops were strictly off-limits in all restaurants except for the auxiliary buffet restaurant. Men needed to be in a collared shirt and slacks, while women could wear a nice blouse with trousers or a skirt, or a dress. The dinner dress code was strictly enforced, while the daytime dress code tended to be lenient. Consider your excursion itinerary when planning your outfits. When I visited Titou Gorge in Dominica during my cruise, I needed to bring swimwear and regular clothes. Having a wet bag was essential for keeping my soaked swimsuit separated from everything else.

Similar to other European outfit ideas, I would encourage you to stick to more neutral colors and save the bright colors and bold patterns for your Caribbean sailing. Of course, these are just ideas for what you could consider wearing on formal night. For women, this means a dress most night for dinner and a gown for formal night. I recommend dressing up a bit more since the main dining room is a nice venue, plus it’s fun to look nice. One of my favorite things to wear to dinner on a cruise is a midi dress with sandals. This is an easy way to look dressy, but feel super comfortable.

Some people will dress barely nice than this without any problem. A little black dress is always appropriate for cruise formal nights, however the lace detail on this dress just adds an extra touch of elegance. Like most of the other dresses in this list of cruise outfit ideas, it’s very affordable. Norwegian Freestyle Cruising allows you to dress more casually than you might be able to with other cruise lines. That means you can be more casual in the buffet and regular specialty restaurants.

Comfortable shoes are a must for a trip like this, whether that's a flat sandal with straps or sneakers. Just make sure you're wearing something that won't get caught in the cobblestone streets of Cyprus. Add some fun accessories like a hat or sunglasses and a tote bag to carry all of your souvenirs, and voila — you have an all-day outfit mapped out. To pack for casual nights onboard your Caribbean cruise, women can look to bring bright sundresses, tropical patterns and colorful outfits. I love to pack my dresses that are bright colors, like pink and yellow - these are just quintessential Caribbean cruise outfits for me.

If you are traveling during this time you may get rainy days and stronger winds. Therefore we recommend adding a light jacket that has some waterproofing. Flip flops are not good for walking however I always take them for a Caribbean cruise. They take up very little space in your case so don’t really cause overpacking.
